Cinque Terre is a string of centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline. In each of the 5 towns, colorful houses and vineyards cling to steep terraces, harbors are filled with fishing boats and trattorias turn out seafood specialties along with the Liguria region’s famous sauce, pesto. The Sentiero Azzurro cliffside hiking trail links the villages and offers sweeping sea vistas.

The trail is roughly 12km and includes both flat and very steep sections. The northernmost town, Monterosso al Mare, has a sandy beach and 17th-century Capuchin monastery. Vernazza is known for its picturesque marina and the ruins of Castello Doria, a 15th-century fortress. Corniglia offers a quieter atmosphere and low-key Manarola is known for its Sciacchetrà dessert wine. Riomaggiore, the southernmost village, has a number of restaurants.
